Radar: 2 for the Watch

Unfortunately Runtastic crashes on iOS 9. So I switched to tracking my nordic walks with Apple Watch. This works fine for the most part. But I experienced two issue lately. One of those is quite funny, so I chose to publish the bug reports here as well.

Yes, of course you should also file bug reports for bugs you experience on your Apple watch. We want those to be fixed, even more because they are impacting our daily lives and the usefulness of the watch.

Fitness app loses ability to show heart rate

Summary

When going for a workout (walking outside) I don’t see any current heart rate.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Go into the fitness app
  2. start a workout – Walking Outside

Expected Results

  • On the heart rate page there should be a current heart rate be displayed

Actual Results

  • no information is shown on the heart rate page
  • there are just two dashes and text suggesting that it is measuring
  • see attached screen shot.

Notes

Even though there is no display of the heart rate, the green light for the sensor is active. Also, later, I can see recorded heart rate values in the health app. Therefore the bug probably is in the fitness app.

No heart rate during workout

No, I didn’t just walk 24 kilometers in 77 minutes

Summary

During my usual walk (about 6.3 kilometers) I saw the distance suddenly jump to 24,05 km. I was walking with my iPhone in my back pocket listening to a podcast.

Steps to Reproduce

about 8124, according to a later workout, though I don’t know what combination of factors lead to this jump.

Expected Results

The same round – done a day afterwards – yielded these expected results:

  • outdoor walk
  • 272 active calories outdoor walk,
  • total time 1:07:12
  • 6.3 kilometers

Actual Results

  • outdoor walk
  • 289 active calories
  • total time 1:17:20,
  • total distance 25.99 kilometers

Notes

I suspect that you’d get a result like this if Core Location loses precision dramatically. There should be some sanity checking where the distance travelled is totally unrealistic compared to mode of locomotion, i.e. I could not possibly have walked 26 kilometers but only used 289 Calories and also not in 77 minutes.
